“Improve Your Garden’s Aesthetic Appeal with a Wide Variety of Colorful Roses”
Zinnias are characterized by their stiff and hairy stems, with oval or lance-shaped leaves arranged opposite each other and often clasping the stem. The beautiful garden varieties grown for their showy flowers are derived from the Zinnia violacea species (Z. elegans). The solitary flower heads are borne at the ends of branches, growing at the junction of a bract (leaflike structure) and the receptacle. The flowers come in a wide range of colors except for blue. Different types of garden zinnias vary from dwarf compact plants that are less than 0.3 meters (1 foot) tall with flowers 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) in diameter, to giant forms that can reach up to 1 meter tall, with flowers that can span up to 15 centimeters (6 inches) across. Another lesser-known species of zinnia is the Z. angustifolia, which typically grows 0.5 meters tall and has small yellow or orange blossoms.
Although some zinnias may appear unsightly and rough, they have admirable qualities: they bloom abundantly and for a long time, and can withstand full sun, drought, and neglect better than most other garden plants.
Zinnias are annuals, meaning they will grow for one season to produce flowers and seeds, but will not return in subsequent years. They feature bright, solitary, daisy-like flowerheads on a single, erect stem, which makes them ideal for use as cut flowers or as a food source for butterflies.
Types of Zinnias The Zinnia elegans is the most popular species of zinnia, and has been selectively bred to produce a wide variety of unique cultivars.
There are three main types of zinnia flowers: single, semidouble, and double. The distinction between these forms comes from the number of petal rows and whether or not the flower center is visible:
- Single-flowered zinnias have a single row of petals and a visible center.
